Law Office of Paula Mackin

As an attorney with over twenty five years experience in legal issues affecting children and their families, and as an adoptive parent who has experienced both infertility and the joys and difficulties of adopting, I offer competent and compassionate advice to clients on all infertility related and adoption issues.

I represent only prospective parents and birth parents, not adoption agencies or clinics, which allows me to provide independent and impartial advice with respect to all adoption and reproductive technology matters.

The process of adoption and infertility intervention can produce stress and confusion.

Understanding how the laws apply to you as a prospective parent can clarify your options, minimize legal risks and uncertainty, and prevent difficulties from arising at the time of birth, placement or thereafter.

Some of the many legal tasks that arise include:

bulletChoosing the right home study and placement services;
bulletReviewing and negotiation of agency contracts;
bulletClarifying the rights and responsibilities of prospective parents, birth parents, adoption agencies, donors, surrogates and negotiating agreements between and among the parties;
bulletInterpreting and synchronizing the laws of the state of birth and the state(s) of residence of birth parents and prospective parents to minimize risks to adoption;
bulletRepresenting adopters after placement as issues arise with agencies or birth parents;
bulletCoordinating applicable state, federal and international law respecting reproductive technology and adoptions;
bulletCompleting legal parentage processes, finalizing adoptions and related court matters.

Honors graduate, Georgetown University (B.S.L. 1971); George Washington University Law School (J.D. 1974).
